Segmentation & Association!

As the case of Kathua unfolded, the brutality of the rape and murder had created a dissent among the population. As the dissent grew loud and strong in public forums like Facebook, we had mixed opinions as public reaction of the case.

As my newsfeed got populated with multiple opinions, I chose a different role. I chose to sit back and sip into the content. Its not like I didnt have an opinion. I did have something as loud as possible. Yet I thought, I should dissect the arguments of these people. But, all I ended up was segmenting them into groups where I can place them. Yes, a segmentation happened without much effort within few hours.

The Believers:

"The case should be dealt with utmost seriousness but the religious affiliation tags provided should be removed." It’s a Rape case and it should be seen as a rape case.

I am quite concerned about this argument as I find it as a method chosen by people to selectively disassociate themselves from the crime. Though, I don’t blame them but I believe their argument is built as a defence mechanism. They don’t want to be identified with the crime. It hurts them to accept the argument with the added religious tag since it holds them responsible for not refining a religion they belong to. Hence, without disowning the people from the religion they want to untag the religious association which is part of the news.

Atheist Liberals:

Any form of religious extremism should be clamped down from now on. We are not questioning the raising rightwing extremist behaviour which unless questioned will put the nation under huge risk. There is a religious tone attached to it and it should be curbed by the govt with an iron fist.

Quite a liberal thought [ in my opinion].Quite an anti national view also as per the new dictionary.

Blind Economic Right-wing:

The case is damaging the image of India in the world forum. Its common to find rape cases in India and we should try to stop it. By making it into a huge issue online and offline is going to hurt the image of India as a developing nation.

That’s the argument by the blind Nationalists who want to show India an utopia of the world. I feel sorry for these people. You are like those people who are not willing to look at themselves in a full size mirror but feel happy to look at themselves in a rear view mirror. You need to see the full picture to understand the truth.

Our dear Bhakts:

The govt is acting on it. The perpetrators should be given a death penalty. The media and the Congress are trying to politicise the event.

The BJP supporters or the Bhakts as others name them — Congress is a political party and it will try to come to power. Its not an NGO to keep its mouth shut and do social service to everyone. It will do its own drama to make use of the situation as any other Political party. This group fails to accept this truth.

Poor Common Man:

This incident makes me feel nauseating. The story is so gruesome and I can’t believe that it happened in India. I am afraid where we are heading as a society. We should hang these people and shouldn’t let the juvenile criminals to be on the road.

This is the common man who is so emotional and thinks the world is becoming bad everyday.

My Opinion on the issue:

Why do we say that the religious identity shouldn’t be linked to the Unnao case? Because it’s getting politicised or getting Communalised?! Nope.

The reason is neither of these. We are the same bloody Indians who take pride when an Indian wins a gold medal in Olympics Or when an Indian becomes a CEO of a top notch tech firm. We feel happy at those moments because we feel better when we associate ourselves with an achievement. We feel that we have accomplished something good because winning triggers the release of testosterone and dopamine into our brain.

We feel guilty when this factor of association works.Removing the religious identity from this case will make us feel better as it doesn’t drags us inside this issue but makes us a mere observer which is a much more comfortable position to take. Its just our defence mechanism in action at the moment.

This shall also pass soon!!
